[9581] January 9, 1998 TO: INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE No. 1-98 RE: INSTITUTE SUBMITS LETTER TO TREASURY ABOUT MARKET ACCESS PROBLEMS IN TAIWAN ______________________________________________________________________________ Attached is a copy of a letter the Institute sent on January 7, 1998 to Treasury Department Assistant Secretary Timothy F. Geithner detailing the problems Institute members have encountered in marketing their products and services in Taiwan. The letter focuses on eight areas where Taiwanese regulations governing securities investment trusts (mutual funds) and securities investment counseling enterprises create barriers to market entry for foreign investment management firms. The letter urges Treasury officials to raise these items with Taiwanese government representatives in forthcoming meetings between the US and Taiwan and in on-going negotiations over Taiwan’s accession to the WTO.
