1 The RFI can be accessed on the SEC*s world wide web homepage at: http://www.sec.gov. It can also be found at Exchange Act Release No. 34-36683, 61 FR 740 (January 10, 1996). January 26, 1996 TO: ACCOUNTING/TREASURERS COMMITTEE No. 5-96 RE: SEC REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON EDGAR FILING SYSTEM ______________________________________________________________________________ The Securities and Exchange commission has published the attached Request for Information ("RFI") concerning the SECs electronic filing system known as EDGAR.1 The SEC seeks comments on how to improve the EDGAR filing process. In particular, the RFI describes four different models for filing and disseminating EDGAR documents that are presently under consideration by the SEC (a diagram provided by the SEC of each of these filing models is also attached). While the first two models focus primarily on how documents are disseminated once they have been filed with the SEC, models three and four focus on the type of depository that would accept filings. Models three and four contemplate the establishment of an "approved filing depository," which would accept filings in the filers own word processing format. The depository would then put the filing in EDGAR format for submission to the SEC. The RFI seeks comment, among other things, on the legal and commercial implications of each model. The SEC has extended the deadline for comments on the RFI until February 16, 1996. Please contact the undersigned at 202/326-5851 or Alexander Gavis at 202/326-5923 with any comments that you would like to be included in a possible comment letter of the RFI. Gregory M.
