JULY 17 MEETING AND OTHER MATTERS

| Print
June 5, 1991 TO: PUBLIC INFORMATION COMMITTEE NO. 20-91 RE: July 17 Meeting and Other Matters __________________________________________________________ A majority of you have voted for a committee meeting this summer, with New York City and Wednesday, July 17 being the preferred location and date. On the basis of some preliminary efforts, Steve, Betty, and I feel this could be one of our best meetings ever. We are planning an all day session --from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and we will have a news media panel in the morning. (Floyd Norris of the New York Times and Andy Serwer of Fortune have already agreed to participate, and others will be added.) In addition, the afternoon session will include a major presentation by Dean Rotbart, editor of TJFR financial journalism review, on the inside story of how financial news is covered at major publications. Betty will be sending you a preliminary agenda with response form and information on location of the meeting in a few days. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ We have added a third full-time news media relations person to our staff. She is Malin Jennings. Her experience includes several years as a news anchor and producer at TV stations in Alaska, a two-year stint as press secretary to Alaska's Senator Stevens, and Washington correspondent for CONUS, the 24-hour national TV news service. She will be working alongside Betty Hart and John Collins, and will concentrate on (but not be limited to) working with TV and radio news organizations. Needless to say, we expect Malin to provide a powerful boost to our national media relations efforts. In addition to my visits to news organizations in various cities during recent months, Dave Silver and I had some very good meetings in New York on April 30 at Money, Fortune, and Forbes. At Money nine of their staffers, including Tyler Mathisen, sat in on our session. I am targeting Dallas, Denver, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and Omaha for news media visits this summer. Also, attached to this memo is a copy of a column that resulted from my recent visit to San Antonio. We did not see it in time to attach to my recent report on my sunbelt tour. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Stan Hinden told me yesterday that the Washington Post is considering the addition of a regular mutual fund column to its business section. He asked for suggestions on possible authors. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ We had over 80 news persons covering our recent General Membership Meeting, an all-time record. We are including the resulting stories in our weekly news clips. Best regards, Erick Kanter
