TO: PENSION COMMITTEE No. 16-09
PENSION OPERATIONS ADVISORY COMMITTEE No. 17-09     RE: CONFERENCE CALL TO DISCUSS TREASURY REQUEST FOR COMMENTS ON 529 PLANS - THURSDAY AUG. 6, 2:00 PM ET

The Treasury Department has asked for comments on Section 529 college savings plans (see the attached notice) to assist the Department as it prepares a report examining how people save using 529 plans and whether they are taking appropriate steps to manage risk.  In addition, the report will identify options and best practices for making the 529 plans more effective.  The report is an initiative of the Middle Class Task Force chaired by Vice President Joe Biden. [1]  The Treasury Department specifically is interested in data, research studies, opinions citing hard data, or references thereof, and the notice contains a number of specific questions.  Comments are requested by Friday, August 14, 2009.

We will have a conference call on Thursday, August 6, at 2:00 pm ET to discuss whether the Institute should submit comments and, if so, what information is available.  The dial-in number for the call is 888-970-4130 and the passcode is 12691.
