INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE No. 4-07
INTERNATIONAL INVESTING SUBCOMMITTEE No. 1-07
INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS ADVISORY COMMITTEE No. 4-07
PRIMARY CONTACTS - MEMBER COMPLEX No. 5-07
SEC RULES COMMITTEE No. 26-07     RE: APPOINTMENT OF NEW SENIOR COUNSEL-INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

ICI for many years has focused on issues that arise for funds and their advisers in the international arena.  That is why I am pleased to announce that Susan M. Olson has been appointed to succeed Bob Grohowski as our new Senior Counsel—International Affairs.

Susan, a 10-year veteran of the Securities and Exchange Commission staff, will serve as ICI’s lead counsel on a wide range of global issues facing U.S. mutual funds.  She will represent the Institute and the industry before the World Trade Organization, the International Organization of Securities Commissioners (IOSCO), and foreign regulators and legislators.  Susan will also lead the Institute's efforts to help U.S. mutual funds comply with anti-money laundering regulations.  She will work closely with the International Committee, the International Investing Subcommittee, the AML Compliance Working Group, and the International Operations Advisory Committee, as well as other member groups.

Most recently, Susan served as Senior Counsel in the international branch of the SEC’s Office of the Chief Counsel, where she resolved legal issues arising under the Investment Company Act and the Investment Advisers Act and provided guidance for trade negotiations.  As Senior Counsel, Susan also represented the Division of Investment Management at triennial meetings of IOSCO Standing Committee 5, which focuses on the regulation of mutual funds and other collective investment plans, and prepared and presented U.S. responses for IOSCO papers.  Previously, Susan served as Branch Chief and Attorney-Adviser in the Office of Insurance Products.

Before joining the SEC, Susan worked for eight years at the Washington, DC, office of McGuireWoods LLP. Susan received her bachelor’s degree in philosophy and political science from Wellesley College in Massachusetts.  She received her law degree from University of Virginia.

Susan’s experience with the international branch of the SEC makes her very well qualified to carry on the Institute’s international work.  We are fortunate to have someone with her knowledge of these vital issues join us.

Attached for your information is a copy of the press release announcing Susan’s appointment.  I hope you will join me in welcoming her to the Institute.
