USTR SEEKS COMMENTS ON ENHANCING US-EU DIALOGUE

| Print
ACTION REQUESTED [17978] September 13, 2004 TO: INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE No. 44-04 RE: USTR SEEKS COMMENTS ON ENHANCING US-EU DIALOGUE In August 2004, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) issued a notice and request for comments on ways to enhance the economic relationship between the United States and the European Union (EU). A copy of the notice is attached. In June 2004, President Bush and his EU counterparts at the US-EU Summit in Ireland agreed to the “US-EU Declaration on Strengthening our Economic Partnership.” The US government intends to convene a number of public dialogue sessions in the coming months as well as participate in conferences and meetings with business, consumer, labor, environmental, and academic communities to outline proposals for possible adoption by governments. The US government seeks to stimulate concrete ideas for specific government actions that could enhance US-EU economic integration. The topics that the US government hopes to explore in this context include, among others: (1) what should be done to better mesh US and EU regulatory approaches and (2) how to enhance transparency and public participation in economic policy formulation. The Institute plans to submit comments to USTR. The deadline for written comments is November 15, 2004. If there are any particular issues that you think the Institute should raise with USTR, please contact me at (202) 326-5810 or at jchoi@ici.org by Friday, October 15. Jennifer S.
