February 15, 1990 TO: MARKETING COMMITTEE NO. 4-90 DIRECT MARKETING COMMITTEE NO. 5-90 SALES FORCE MARKETING COMMITTEE NO. 5-90 SHAREHOLDER COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE NO. 5-90 PUBLIC INFORMATION COMMITTEE NO. 3-90 RESEARCH COMMITTEE NO. 5-90 SMALL FUNDS COMMITTEE NO. 3-90 MEMBERS INTERESTED IN PUBLIC INFORMATION NO. 2-90 RE: FIFTH ANNUAL ADVERTISING/MARKETING SEMINARS __________________________________________________________ The Institute will conduct seminars on mutual fund advertising and marketing in four cities this spring and summer. For the fifth consecutive year, this series of regional, one-day seminars will feature presentations on the legal, creative, and strategic aspects of marketing mutual funds directly to consumers, as well as through a sales force. Speakers will include Clark Hooper, Director of Advertising for the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), and legal and marketing executives from member mutual fund organizations, as well as outside experts. Presentations will be targeted at 1) newcomers to the fund industry; 2) those who are new to the marketing function; 3) non-marketing executives who are seeking greater familiarity with the marketing function; and 4) sales/marketing/public relations executives who have not attended these seminars in the past. Registration for these seminars will be limited to employees of ICI member organizations and their advertising/design/public relations agencies. Non-members of the Institute should supply a letter from the Institute member with which they have a business relationship. Please register early, as space will be limited and it may not be possible to accommodate walk-in registrations. Topics to be Covered The program of this seminar is designed to provide basic information on various aspects of mutual fund marketing, with the goal of providing ideas which attendees may integrate into their own marketing programs. The seminar also provides an overview of SEC rules for advertising and sales literature (presented by legal counsel of an ICI member fund complex), and the role the NASD plays in that regulation (presented by Clark Hooper, of the NASD). The overview is designed to provide basic information for a marketing audience.
