Enclosed are the results of the Institute's survey on
closed-end funds. Table I contains total outstanding assets,
grouped by type of fund, for each year end 1984 through 1988.
Table II provides the annual volume of underwritings similarly
grouped for 1985 through 1988. Table III consists of four parts,
each showing selected data on a per fund basis for year-end 1988
(except where otherwise noted). The listing of funds is
alphabetical within investment objective category.
These data were compiled from a survey of members and non-
members funds. At year-end 1988 there were 168 funds included.
Based on information obtained from the SEC, this number
represents almost 65 percent of the universe of closed-end funds.
The survey will be repeated annually, expanded to include any
funds underwritten in the last year, to provide a body of data to
help you identify trends in the industry. If you have comments
