ICI Expands ETF Resources

The October 23, 2015, edition of Focus on Funds offers an update on the Institute’s research and analysis regarding exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, ICI Director, Media Relations: Welcome to Focus on Funds, the Investment Company Institute’s weekly roundup of industry news, ICI activities, and research findings.

ICI continues to rapidly expand its research and analysis offerings on exchange-traded funds [ETFs]. I spoke with one of our subject matter experts, Jane Heinrichs, about what we’re offering.

Ortbals-Tibbs: One thing that we’re trying to do right now is provide more information, education, about ETFs because it is such a fast-growing part of the industry.

Jane Heinrichs, Associate General Counsel: Yes, so to that end we actually, in the coming months, we’re going to be publishing a paper that will look at the interactions of ETFs and the underlying stock and bond markets. And that paper actually builds on a paper we did last year that was a comprehensive primer of the U.S. ETF market.

Ortbals-Tibbs: So that will be coming out this fall, you’ve also had several other things going on over the past few months around ETFs. What else is active?

Heinrichs: That’s right. Earlier this year we put out a paper that was the result of a survey of authorized participants and other liquidity provides in the ETF space. And then earlier this summer we actually submitted comments to the SEC on how ETFs trade and how they are listed. So we’ve been very busy and we will continue to be.

Ortbals-Tibbs: So for members there might be a lot more information and new resources out there on the website that they’re not even necessarily aware of.

Heinrichs: That’s correct.
