Washington, DC, November 28, 2017—The Investment Company Institute has named Susan M. Olson as its general counsel.
Since 2014, Olson has served as chief counsel of ICI Global, the Institute’s international program. She joined ICI as senior counsel, international affairs, in 2007, after serving for 10 years in various roles at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
As general counsel, Olson will be the Institute’s chief legal officer, with responsibility for the full range of legal and regulatory matters affecting ICI and its members, including investment company, capital markets, retirement policy, tax, and international issues. She will report to ICI President and CEO Paul Schott Stevens.
“Susan brings to her new position a wealth of professional experience, deep knowledge of our membership, and a comprehensive understanding of the challenges that regulated funds face in the United States and other jurisdictions,” Stevens said. “As a member of our senior management team, she has been instrumental to the work and success of ICI Global. I am confident she will provide outstanding leadership for our Law Department.”
Stevens also thanked Dorothy M. Donohue, deputy general counsel, securities regulation, who has served as acting general counsel since June 2017. “Dorothy has guided our legal efforts with skill and expertise through a challenging period of regulatory change,” Stevens said. “As deputy general counsel, Dorothy will continue to play a major role in our busy agenda with the SEC and other regulators in the months ahead. We are deeply grateful for her many years of outstanding service at ICI.”
Before joining ICI, Olson served from 1997 to 2007 at the SEC, as senior counsel in the Office of Chief Counsel and as branch chief and attorney-adviser in the Office of Insurance Products. From 1989 to 1997, she was an associate at McGuireWoods LLP.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Olson is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
Olson’s appointment to general counsel is effective as of November 28, 2017.
